Spain preview: Underwhelming start
Spain began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a goalless draw against debutants Cabo Verde in Atlanta last week. Luis de la Fuente's La Roja didn't necessarily bash the door down, either. While Cabo Verde had some notably heroic performances at the back, the Spanish failed to really create anything clear-cut, bar a Ferran Torres effort just before half-time.
Luis de la Fuente has remained confident and calm in the aftermath of their shock draw but some supporters will be concerned that it is now a pattern. After a goalless draw with Egypt in March, Spain also laboured to a 1-1 draw with Iraq in a pre-tournament friendly, and a lack of precision and incision in the final third is costing them at the moment.
Saudi Arabia preview: Stubborn Saudis
Having started FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar in famous style as they came from behind to defeat eventual champions Argentina, Saudi Arabia once again produced something of an upset in their opener at FIFA World Cup 2026 as The Green Falcons shared a 1-1 draw with two-time world champions Uruguay in Miami.
After a generally even contest in the first half, with Uruguay struggling for fluency and intensity, Abdulelah Al Amri pounced on some unconvincing goalkeeping from Fernando Muslera, parrying a shot from a corner kick, to give the Saudis a shock lead in Florida. The second half was a different story as an aggressive Uruguay took the game to them with Maximiliano Araujo finding an equaliser, but that was all Marcelo Bielsa's side could muster against an organised and stubborn Saudi Arabia.
Spain team news: Lamine Yamal surely starts

Luis de la Fuente had suggested from the moment that Spain jetted off for the tournament that Lamine Yamal would be touch-and-go for their opener and, despite being passed fit, the Barcelona attacker only came on after the second half hydration break.
Surely now, after such a lacklustre performance, De la Fuente will be under pressure to perhaps rush Yamal into a start, while Nico Williams could also find himself pushed back into the eleven, too, to provide some much-needed pace and directness to the stodgy Spanish attack.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Simon; Llorente, Cubarsi, Laporte, Cucurella; Pedri, Rodri, Olmo; Yamal, Oyarzabal, Williams

Georgios Donis went with a flexible system against the Uruguayans with a solid back four that could also be a wing-back system, with Mohammad Abu Al Shamat playing a crucial role up and down the right flank ahead of Lens defender Saud Abdulhamid.
There was a slightly surprising selection with Musab Al Juwayr preferred in attack alongside the experienced Salem Al Dawsari and Firas Al Buraikan. Abdullah Al Hamdan was a doubt for the opener but came off the bench late on against Uruguay.

Spain vs Saudi Arabia prediction
Spain dominated possession against Cabo Verde and La Roja will once again be expected to dictate the tempo of the game against the Saudi Arabians. However, as Cabo Verde proved after the solid performances of both Egypt and Iraq against the Spanish, without the spark of a fully-fit and firing Lamine Yamal, the Spanish can appear one-dimensional in their approach, especially against the specific style of football that the Saudis will try to implement with a rigid low block.
Spain should finally come out on top in this one with Yamal coming back for a larger part of the game. However, as they withstood a Uruguayan blitz in the second half last week, the Saudis will again fancy themselves to frustrate a Spain side that are now susceptible to being blunted quite comfortably.
