Having beaten Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the Israeli Super Cup to begin their campaign, Maccabi Tel-Aviv now come into this one on the back of a 6-0 aggregate hammering of Moldovan giants Sheriff Tiraspol. They won the first-leg 5-0 in Transnistria before heavily rotating and winning the second-leg at the neutral venue of Szombathely in Hungary.
CSKA Sofia won the Bulgarian Cup last season for the first time in five years and Hristo Yanev’s side have come through two rounds to reach this stage of the UEFA Europa League. After defeating Derry City in the first qualifying round, they then edged past Azeri outfit Qarabag on penalties last week.
CSKA Sofia have shown they can be stubborn but Maccabi Tel-Aviv do remain favourites for what is expected to be a low-scoring encounter in this first-leg in Hungary.
