A breakdown of Julian Alvarez's Champions League goals

Since moving to Europe from River Plate, Julian Alvarez has fast established himself as another top striker from Argentina who is an increasingly frequent goalscorer in the UEFA Champions League.

Alvarez scored his first Champions League goal back in October 2022 against Copenhagen whilst at Pep Guardiola’s Man City, and the following two seasons saw the Argentinian’s numbers really shoot up as he proceeded to find the net over ten times across that period. This despite Alvarez leaving the Premier League side in summer 2024 to join Atletico Madrid.

It's interesting to study how Alvarez has been so successful in front of goal for two different clubs in a fairly short period of time in European football's premier club competition. As it stands, Alvarez’s best season in front of goal in the Champions League came in 2024-25, his first at Atletico Madrid
Alvarez scored seven goals in that season, an improvement on his previous campaign at Man City, where he managed five goals.

Over 80% of Alvarez’s goals in the tournament so far have come in the group stage/league phase.
The latest stage of the competition in which Alvarez boasts a goal was the 2022-23 semi-final second leg for Man City against Real Madrid, the season he became a Champions League winner for the first time.

Alvarez currently boasts goals against clubs from ten different nations and that number is only likely to increase the longer the Argentina star remains in Europe.

Thibaut Courtois is perhaps the most notable goalkeeper to have conceded at the hands of Alvarez.
