Stuttgart preview: Balancing act
It’s a common story when a Bundesliga club without the resources of Bayern Munich struggles to balance domestic and European commitments, inevitably leading to poor results in the Bundesliga especially when considering the short turnaround between games and the effect it has physically and mentally on players.
We’re seeing that again here in the early stages of the season with Stuttgart. Only days after getting the better of Viking in the Champions League, the hosts fell to their second domestic loss of the season, going down 2-1 to Hoffenheim in Sinsheim.
Borussia Dortmund preview: Deadly duo
Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac reaped the benefits of pairing up Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva in his starting line-up against Paderborn last time out as the pair combined early on. Silva had set up Guirassy days earlier in the Champions League but this time it was Guirassy setting up Silva with just five minutes on the clock.
Dortmund ended up cruising to a 3-0 triumph to make it nine points from nine to begin the Bundesliga season. They’ve scored at least twice in all three of their games so far and have also registered two clean sheets.
Stuttgart team news: Strong team despite missing faces
Despite a raft of injury problems, it is a strong Stuttgart side likely to be named by Sebastian Hoeness with strikers Demirovic and Pejcinovic likely battling for one place up front.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Bredlow; Vagnoman, Jeltsch, Chabot, Mittelstadt; Promel, Stiller; El Khannouss, Undav, Fuhrich; Demirovic
Unavailable: Agu Assignon (Injured), Diehl (Injured), Jaquez (Injured), Malanga (Injured), Seimen (Injured), Tomas (Injured), Zagadou (Injured)
Questionable: Nartey (Injured)
Borussia Dortmund team news: Karetsas back in training
Borussia Dortmund have been boosted by Karetsas returning to training after health problems forced him off the pitch against Villarreal in the Champions League. Whilst he is unlikely to start here, we could see him off the bench.
Predicted XI (3-4-3): Kobel; Anton, Schlotterbeck, Bensebaini; Ryerson, Bellingham, Nmecha, Svensson; Nwaneri, Guirassy, Silva
Unavailable: Can (Injured), Konstantelias (Injured), Lerma (Injured), Mane (Injured)

Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund prediction
There is plenty of attacking firepower on show across both of these two clubs, making this a mouth-watering fixture. For Borussia Dortmund, Guirassy returns to his former club and with the in-form Silva helping get the best out of him, that doesn’t bode well for this Stuttgart backline. But the hosts boast some excellent offensive weapons of their own, not least German international Deniz Undav, who is capable of both goals and assists.
Ermedin Demirovic has a hat-trick to his name already this season, albeit in the Champions League and head coach Hoeness isn’t known for backing down from his largely attack-minded style of play. This has all the ingredients to be an absolute thriller and backing not just over 2.5 goals, but also both teams to score has to be favoured.
Stuttgart vs Borussia Dortmund tip: Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score
