Mainz preview: Leaking goals

Mainz are in terrible form defensively, and it's costing them points. The hosts have conceded at least three goals in three of their last four league games and ended up on the losing side each time.

Two of those defeats came on home soil, as Mainz were edged out 3-4 by Bayer Leverkusen and beaten 2-3 at the hands of Werder Bremen. They also went on the road to SV Elversberg and got thrashed 4-1. Until their backline improves and they plug the gaps, Mainz are likely to be in for more punishment, especially here against a side of Bayern's class.

Bayern Munich preview: No room for error

Bayern Munich blew a huge opportunity last weekend to put some daylight between themselves and Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga. The Rekordmeister went ahead twice in Der Klassiker, but Niko Kovac's side pegged them back on both occasions, forcing Bayern to settle for a 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena.

That leaves the two clubs level on 18 points, with Bayern's superior goal difference keeping them top. There was better news in midweek, though. Despite missing a raft of players, the German champions won 0-2 away at Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, a hugely impressive result, not to mention a clean sheet.

Mainz team news: Double suspension

Both Mwene and Posch are suspended for Mainz, a big blow for head coach Urs Fischer, who is also without Kohr and Silas Katompa Mvumpa

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Zentner; da Costa, Gruber, Potulski; Caci, Lee, Sano, Amiri, Widmer; Tietz, Becker

Unavailable: Kohr (Injured), Mwene (Suspended), Posch (Suspended), Silas (Injured)

Questionable: Ruoppi (Injured)

Bayern Munich team news: Light in attack

Bayern Munich remain short in attacking midfielder with Diaz, Gnabry, Musiala and Saibari all out. That should mean another start for Lennart Karl, with Brown likely supporting Olise and Kane.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Kim, Stanisic; Kimmich, Pavlovic; Olise, Karl, Brown; Kane

Unavailable: Gyamerah (Injured), Seifert (Injured), Zimmerschied (Injured)

Questionable: Diaz (Injured), Gnabry (Injured), Musiala (Injured), Ndiaye (Injured), Saibari (Injured)

Key stats

  • Bayern top the table on goal difference coming into Matchweek 9 (W5 D3), having scored 27 goals – the most in the Bundesliga – and conceded eight.

Mainz vs Bayern Munich prediction

It's critical that Bayern Munich take advantage of a Mainz side who have had real trouble keeping the opposition at bay over the past few weeks. Confidence within the home defence is clearly extremely low, and when you factor in the calibre of players Bayern can call upon going forward, there's no excuse for the visitors not to rack up a few goals.

One player who will be desperate to get on the scoresheet more than once is Harry Kane. Unbelievably, the England captain has failed to find the net in his last three appearances in all competitions, an extremely rare occurrence for such a prolific marksman. He won't be kept quiet for long, though. Back normal service to resume, both for Kane and for the champions.
