Arsenal preview: Getting over the line

Having expected to try and evolve their style of football in the early few weeks of the season, Mikel Arteta’s side begun to regress to what is their best which is getting themselves over the line with immense defensive solidity.

After winning at Anfield in the Premier League against Liverpool for the first time in nearly 15 years last week, Arsenal then defeated Czech champions Slavia Prague by two goals to one in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

Hull preview: Difficult to beat

Hull City, following their promotion via the Championship play-offs last season, began their campaign with back-to-back victories against Manchester United and Coventry City but The Tigers are now winless in seven matches since then.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side have remained difficult to beat, though, with five draws and two defeats in those seven games. The fifth of which came at home to fellow newly-promoted outfit Ipswich Town in a 2-2 draw at the MKM Stadium last weekend.

Arsenal team news: Saliba close

William Saliba has been unavailable throughout the campaign thus far but the Frenchman is close to a return with Mikel Arteta explaining he was involved in a game behind closed doors last week and so his return here shouldn’t be ruled out.

In terms of confirmed absentees, key winger Bukayo Saka is sidelined for The Gunners alongside Max Dowman, who is missing through suspension after his sending off against Fleetwood Town in the EFL Cup.

Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Raya; Timber, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori; Rice, Guimaraes; Madueke, Odegaard, Tzolis; Havertz

Unavailable: Dowman (Suspended), Saka (Injured)

Questionable: Saliba (Fitness)

Hull team news: Crooks suspended

Having been dealing with plenty of injuries throughout the season, Hull are now without versatile midfielder Matt Crooks. He is missing through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign last week.

Jack Butland has returned to training but remained out of the squad last week as Charlie Hughes nears a return alongside Lucas Gourna-Douath and Darko Gyabi.

Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Tzolakis; Ajayi, Egan, Mendy; Coyle, Iroegbunam, Slater, Giles; Belloumi, McBurnie, Stroud

Unavailable: Hughes (Fitness), Targett (Injured), Matazo (Injured), Crooks (Suspended), Gourna-Douath (Injured), Gyabi (Injured), Ansah (Injured)

Questionable: Butland (Fitness)

Key stats

  • Arsenal have won eight of their ten Premier League meetings with Hull since 1992/93 (W8 D1 L1), scoring in all ten.
  • Hull's only win came in the first meeting, 2-1 at the Emirates on 27 September 2008; Arsenal are unbeaten in nine meetings since (W8 D1).
  • Arsenal have won the last three meetings – 3-1, 4-1 and 2-0 – the most recent at home on 11 February 2017, during Hull's last Premier League season.
  • Arsenal's home record against Hull is W3 D1 L1; the only other time they dropped points was a 2-2 draw on 18 October 2014.
  • Arsenal's 4-1 win at Hull on 17 September 2016 is the highest-scoring meeting and their joint-biggest win in the fixture.
  • Arsenal top the table coming into Matchweek 10 with 24 points from nine games (W8 L1), three ahead of Man City.
  • That is Arsenal's joint-third-best start after nine games in 35 Premier League seasons since 1992/93 – only 2004/05 and 2007/08 (25 points each) were better, with 2022/23 equal.
  • Arsenal have won four in a row and kept three straight clean sheets, including 1-0 at Liverpool on 1 November; their six clean sheets are the joint-most in the division with Brighton, and their five goals conceded the fewest.
  • Arsenal have won seven consecutive home league games since 25 April 2026 and have won all four at home this season, scoring nine and conceding two.
  • Hull, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2016/17, are 11th with 11 points (W2 D5 L2), but have not won in seven league games (D5 L2) since opening with a 2-0 home win over Man Utd and a 1-0 win at Coventry.
  • Hull's five draws are the joint-most in the division (with Leeds and Brentford); they are unbeaten at home this season (W1 D4).
  • Hull have won only one of four away league games this season (W1 D1 L2) and have conceded in each of their last three on the road.
  • Rob Jones has refereed Arsenal at home five times in the Premier League and they are unbeaten (W4 D1); overall they are W4 D2 L1 in seven games with him.
  • Hull's only previous Premier League game with Jones was this season's 1-1 home draw with Brentford on 25 October.

Arsenal vs Hull prediction

Hull have been awkward opposition for teams to come up against but with a bit of enterprise, too, rather than just sheer conservatism – scoring 11 goals, which is the same as Liverpool and only three fewer than The Gunners. That said, the gulf in quality may well be preventing them from getting over the line and so siding with Arsenal has to be the way to go for this one in a likely low-scoring contest at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal vs Hull tip: Arsenal to win & under 3.5 goals
