Werder Bremen preview: Home comforts

Werder Bremen have recovered strongly since their 4-1 loss at the hands of Freiburg in the first week of German top flight action. They most recently fought to a 1-1 draw on the road at FC Cologne, but their finest moment of the campaign so far came at home to RB Leipzig, an outstanding performance earning them a 3-1 victory.

Clearly results at home will be key to the success of Werder this season and we saw in that game the effect the supporters can have, not to mention the players at what could prove to be a fortress for Daniel Thioune’s side in 2026-27.

Augsburg preview: Denied at the death

It’s already been an outstanding start to the campaign for Augsburg and it could’ve been even better had they held on to a slender lead over Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. In the end, Schick had the final say and denied Augsburg of three points and a 100% record after three rounds of action, as Manuel Baum’s side settled for a 2-2 draw.

Averaging three goals a game in the Bundesliga so far, only Freiburg have scored more goals than this Augsburg side and that bodes well against a Werder side, who are yet to shut an opponent out in the league, shipping six goals.

Werder Bremen team news: Worrying injury list

Werder Bremen are without plenty of senior players already which is less than ideal, with the likes of Agu, Njinmah, Stage and Topp all on the treatment table for the hosts and Lynen a significant doubt.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Hein; Arthur, Pieper, Friedl, Deman; Regeer, Reis; Dinkci, Chuki, Grull; Fullkrug

Unavailable: Agu (Injured), Ndiaye (Injured), Njinmah (Injured), Stage (Injured), Topp (Injured)

Questionable: Lynen (Injured)

Augsburg team news: Three at the back

Expect Augsburg to opt for the same 3-4-3 formation as we saw from them against Bayer Leverkusen, with striker Michael Gregoritsch the focal point in attack. Four players are missing, including Kade and Suso.

Predicted XI (3-4-3): Dahmen; Banks, Matsima, Brackelmann; Wolf, Massengo, Rieder, Behrens; Ibrahimovic, Gregoritsch, Fellhauer

Unavailable: Kade (Injured), Mounie (Fitness), Sakar (Injured), Suso (Injured)

Questionable: Breithaupt (Injured)

Werder Bremen vs Augsburg prediction

A game of cat and mouse may well emerge here between Werder Bremen and Augsburg with both sides sensing blood. On their home patch, Werder should naturally prove to be more aggressive going forward, especially after what they showed against RB Leipzig. However, Augsburg are a big threat on the counter-attack and are well set up both for set pieces and to exploit space inside the opponent’s half.

You would expect Werder to guard against this and not take too many risks with their attacking set-up, whilst Augsburg will likely be happy to sit in, soak up pressure and look the chance to break. With that in mind, it would be no surprise if these two clubs cancelled each other out and backing a draw has to be considered.

Werder Bremen vs Augsburg tip: Draw
