Former champion Borna Coric arrives in Cincinnati a touch undercooked.

The 2022 winner’s return to action in Toronto ended in defeat after he missed all of June and most of July following defeat in French Open qualifying. 

The Croatian will hope to ignite on courts he has very fond memories off, although his opponent Chris O’Connell is finally in better form after picking up two wins in Canada.

The Aussie had won just one of 12 outings prior to a run to the third round in Toronto and comes into a first meeting with Coric ranked 14 places above the former world number 12 and with a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas under his belt.

In normal circumstances, Coric’s love of the tournament would make him a favourite, but his lack of action of late makes it a tricky one to predict. It may well be worth watching a set prior to taking the plunge for either player, just to see how sharp the Croatian is looking.
