The veteran Spaniard had been in fine form on clay and grass as he pushed back into the top 50 but three defeats on the spin leave him in need of a boost in Cincinnati.

It’s a similar story for Altmaier who is ranked only five places below RBA and has won just one of his last six outings. 

This will be a first ever meeting between the pair and the difference may well come down to the preference of surface.
