Danielle Collins made the second-round of the Canadian Open in her most recent event but came unstuck against French Open champion Coco Gauff despite a spirited display and serving for the match in the decider, losing 7-6 4-6 7-6. That would have been one of Collins’ finest wins of the year, but she was unable to get the job done. Nevertheless, a run to the fourth-round of the Miami Open earlier this season highlights the threat she can still pose on a hard court if she performs well.

She will face Taylor Townsend in the first-round of Cincinnati. Townsend enjoyed her best week of the season in her last event, as she went through the qualifying stages and made the quarter-finals at the Washington Open. Her run was ended by eventual winner Leylah Fernandez but there were plenty of positives for Townsend to take from the week.

Collins leads the head-to-head 1-0 on the WTA Tour, winning in the first-round of Indian Wells but that took place all the way back in 2018. The former Australian Open finalist showed her quality in the defeat to Gauff and may just have enough to defeat Townsend, despite her promising week in Washington a fortnight ago.
