Sonay Kartal gave arguably the clearest demonstration yet as to her talents earlier this summer at Wimbledon, as she knocked out seeded opposition in Jelena Ostapenko on her way to the fourth round. The Brit will fancy her chances here against Caroline Garcia when considering the latter’s injury struggles, which have put a dampener on her year so far.
Back in April, Garcia was forced to retire in Brisbane with a lower back problem and her clay court season was also badly affected by injury, a shoulder issue forcing her to withdraw from both the Italian Open and Madrid, before she was beaten in the first round at Roland Garros.
With Garcia retiring following the US Open, motivation for her to go on a deep run in Cincinnati will be high. She’s got the game to do just that, the big question is whether her long-standing injury problems will rear their head again and affect her play.
