Marketa Vondrousova vs Jaqueline Cristian prediction
Marketa Vondrousova returned to action on the WTA Tour last week, coming from a set down to beat youngster Alexandra Eala in the first-round. She then went a set up against Marta Kostyuk, but the Ukrainian fought back to beat the 2023 Wimbledon champion. Vondrousova won the German Open a little over a month ago but will be hopeful of another deep run before the US Open starts. She is comfortable on hard courts and made the quarter-finals in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
Her opponent in round one will be Jaqueline Cristian. Cristian’s performances over the last two tournaments have been encouraging, as she reached the semi-finals of the Iasi Open as the second seed and then transitioned to hard courts with a credible run to the third-round in Montreal, beating 20th seed Linda Noskova along the way.
Cristian seems to be heading into some form right now and we give her the edge over Vondrousova in the first-round, though it may be a tight affair.
