Ben Shelton produced his best result of the tournament so far as he ended Alex de Minaur’s unbeaten run with a straight sets win in the quarter-finals. In the first meeting between the pair, Shelton broke in the sixth service game of the first set and went on to win it, before breaking again early in the second. De Minaur hit back with a break of his own to draw level, but the American was not to be denied as he broke the Australian’s serve for a third time and went on to win 6-3 6-4. The world number seven committed far fewer errors in this match and now plays Taylor Fritz.

Fritz produced another strong performance to beat Andrey Rublev 6-3 7-6. It was yet another brilliant serving display as the former US Open finalist crashed down 20 aces and won 79% of his points on first serve. 

The head-to-head is 1-0 in Fritz’s favour. That encounter was in the second-round of Indian Wells two years ago, with Fritz coming from a set down to win. Shelton is much improved in terms of his ranking since then and has the ability to take down the current American number one. This is likely to involve a tiebreak or two, but Fritz’s consistency may just give him the edge.
