It is widely expected that Chelsea captain Reece James will be the starting right-back for Thomas Tuchel at FIFA World Cup 2026. A player he adored back when James helped him win the UEFA Champions League with the Blues back in 2021, James has been the first-choice, when fit, throughout the Tuchel era at England, with Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold not really getting a look in. However, James can be injury prone and so England will have to be wary of that with what could be a high volume of games in a short period of time. If fully fit though, the Chelsea captain will likely be instrumental at right-back for The Three Lions although James' versatility means he can play multiple positions effectively, including right-wing back, right-centre back and centre midfield.
