The loyalty that Luis de la Fuente is showing to a lot of his UEFA EURO 2024-winning squad has extended to Athletic Club goalkeeper Unai Simon. Turning 29 on the opening day of the tournament, closing in on 60 caps before the tournament gets underway, Simon has endured a difficult season in the Basque Country and, with the emergence of David Raya and Joan Garcia as genuinely elite goalkeeping talents, the pressure has been on Simon’s spot in the starting eleven this summer – but he is set to retain his place as ‘number one’, wearing number 23, at least to begin with.
