Alongside Yeremy Pino, Alex Baena was one of a couple of big money sales made by Villarreal last summer with Pino joining Crystal Palace and Baena moving to Atletico Madrid. The 24-year-old, who turns 25 the day after this summer’s final, endured a mixed debut campaign at the Metropolitano. The versatile attacking midfielder did begin to show his quality for Diego Simeone’s Los Rojiblancos upon the manager’s decision to heavily rotate in the league amid their deep run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, even forcing his way into a starting berth in Simeone’s first-choice eleven by the end of the campaign.
