In the build-up to FIFA World Cup 2026 in USA, Canada and Mexico, we shine a spotlight on Spain.

FIFA World Ranking: 2

Confederation: UEFA

Who is Spain’s head coach for FIFA World Cup 2026?

Spain’s head coach for FIFA World Cup 2026 is Luis de la Fuente, who led them to victory at UEFA EURO 2024. He has been in charge of La Roja since December 2022 after previously being in charge of the Spanish U19, U21 and U23 sides.

Who is Spain’s captain for FIFA World Cup 2026?

Spain’s captain for FIFA World Cup 2026 is Rodri, who becomes the first ever men's footballer to captain La Roja at a FIFA World Cup whilst not playing for a La Liga club.

How many times have Spain participated in a FIFA World Cup before 2026?

16 – 1934, 1950, 1962, 1966, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 (Spain have now qualified for each of the last 12 FIFA World Cups.

What is Spain’s best performance at a FIFA World Cup?

Winners – 2010

How did Spain qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026?

Spain qualified for FIFA World Cup 2026 after finishing top of their group in the UEFA qualification stage. Teams were drawn into 12 groups with Spain placed in Group E alongside Turkiye, Georgia and Bulgaria

After six group games, Spain finished with 16 points after going undefeated with five wins and one draw, leaving them three points above Turkiye in second-place.

Confirmation of Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification came on November 18, 2025 following a 2-2 draw with Turkiye. The two joint-top scorers in Group E were both Spanish players, Mikel Merino and Mikel Oyarzabal.

Who are Spain’s star players?

2025 Ballon d’Or runner-up Lamine Yamal (Barcelona) is already a superstar of the modern game despite being just a teenager, having shone for Spain on the big stage. Young Player of the Tournament at EURO 2024 and the 2024 Golden Boy, Yamal has won the Kopa Trophy twice for his exploits with club and country and the wonderkid’s trophy cabinet already includes three La Liga titles and a European Championship. He recorded four assists at EURO 2024 and also scored the goal of the tournament against France. Yamal’s individual quality with the ball at his feet, dribbling in from the right flank, jinking inside and out and the ability to score from range is a joy to behold and helps make Luis de la Fuente’s 4-3-3 formation so dangerous offensively.

When you think of Spain, the ball playing ability of central midfielders such as Xavi and Iniesta often come to mind and how key they are to the way La Roja operate. Playing that role at FIFA World Cup 2026 will be Pedri (Barcelona), whose creativity and high footballing IQ sets him apart from so many other midfielders. Pedri is also a three-time La Liga winner with Barcelona.

Then you’ve got UEFA EURO 2024 Player of the Tournament Rodri (Man City), the best player you could have to shield the Spanish defence. The 2024 Ballon d’Or winner boasts multiple accolades, including being named UEFA Champions League Player of the Season in 2022-23, the campaign which saw Rodri and Man City become European champions for the first time. He is also a four-time Premier League champion and 2023 FIFA Club World Cup winner with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Expert prediction for Spain’s chances at FIFA World Cup 2026

Whilst Lamine Yamal has been named in the Spanish squad for FIFA World Cup 2026, a hamstring injury is set to rule him out of La Roja’s first group game against Cabo Verde and possibly their second vs Saudi Arabia. Despite this, Spain should be able to win those matches without the young phenom, although Saudi Arabia warrant respect after stunning Argentina in the group stage at FIFA World Cup 2022.

Uruguay are likely Spain’s biggest obstacle in Group H but assuming Yamal is back for that one, La Roja should be at their best. One of the front runners to win the tournament, the expectation is that Spain will at least reach the final four and it would be a surprise (not to mention failure) if they didn’t.

However, the projected bracket sees them set for a collision course with France in the semi-finals, who will be looking for revenge after beating Spain at the same stage during UEFA EURO 2024. Whilst Spain can score multiple goals against any team, France possesses a squad who can match them offensively through the likes of Mbappe, Olise and Dembele. Crucially though, Didier Deschamps is a master at ensuring defensive excellence from Les Bleus and when combined with their attacking potency of France, this Spanish side who failed to keep a clean sheet across the entire knockout stage of EURO 2024 may just come undone.

What round will Spain reach at FIFA World Cup 2026? Semi-Finals
