Jafel Filho: The Brazilian submission artist looks for the biggest win of his career
Fresh off a first round kimura submission victory over Clayton Carpenter, Jafel Filho (17-4) is now 3-2 under the UFC banner since joining the promotion in 2022. A ruthless submission artist once the action hits the mat, Filho has scored the tap in all of his three UFC wins to date, finishing Ode’ Osbourne and Daniel Barez to add to his eleven submission victories. Filho is a sneakily good flyweight who has only lost to solid levels of competition in the promotion. His only defeats are against the since departed Muhammad Mokaev and the surging Allan Nascimento; two fighters renowned as excellent grapplers in their own right.
Cody Durden: Can "Custom Made" defy the odds and avoid his walking papers?
Staring down the barrel of a potential fifth consecutive loss, it’s highly likely that defeat on Saturday night will spell the end for flyweight mainstay, Cody Durden (17-10-1), in the UFC. The grinding All American wrestler has fallen on tough times of late; Durden is 1-6 dating back to his last win streak in 2023 and has been finished in four of those defeats to boot. He’s as battle tested as they come at 125 pounds, but his durability has noticeably suffered in recent years, to the point where he looks to have one foot out of the door at this point in his career.
Jafel Filho vs Cody Durden prediction
This one is easy. Filho is going to submit Durden with ease, likely in the first round, to justify his status as a huge favorite.
The American has been a well respected staple of the flyweight division for more than half a decade, but it’s not outrageous to suggest that he’s completely shot at this point in the game. His last fight against Nyamjargal Tumendemberel was the prime example of a contest where prime Durden would have leaned on his wrestling to grind out a decision against the unproven prospect, but he just doesn’t have what it takes to gain his opponents’ respect anymore.
Filho may only have had five fights in the UFC to date, but he’s still proven that he’s going to quickly submit anybody who can’t match him on the ground. Furthermore, he’s also got serviceable striking with sneaky power in his back pocket; something that bodes ill for Durden considering he gets wobbled in virtually every fight and got dropped by the notoriously pillow-handed Allan Nascimento.
With all due respect, I don’t think it’s even going to get that far. Durden either misjudges a shot in the early goings and ends up planting his neck directly into a “Pastor” submission, or gets reversed and tapped out in short order.
Prediction: Jafel Filho to win by first round submission
