Yana Santos: Tactical veteran riding a three-fight win streak
Yana Santos (17-8, 1 NC) is a seasoned veteran of the women’s bantamweight division, entering on a three-fight win streak with decisions over Chelsea Chandler, former champion Miesha Tate and Macy Chiasson. A taekwondo black belt and former Russian Muay Thai champion, she fights from an upright stance, keeping range with a sharp jab and long kicks to the body and head, landing cleanly and accurately. On the fence, she keeps scoring with short knees and shoulder strikes. Once a finisher, she’s become a tactical decision machine, with all seven of her UFC wins going the distance. Her upright posture makes her hittable though, and better grapplers can expose her.
Luana Santos: Judo specialist with suffocating top control
Luana Santos (11-2) is 6-1 in the UFC, beating Melissa Croden and Karol Rosa by decision in her last two outings. A judo black belt, she thrives in the clinch with hip tosses and trips, marching forward behind short boxing flurries to tie opponents up on the fence. Since moving up to bantamweight, her top control has become her main weapon, racking up control time as she climbs into dominant positions. The finishes have slowed, but a rare americana over Tainara Lisboa showed creativity, and her takedown defence is excellent. Her weakness is striking at distance – her only loss came when Casey O’Neill outworked her on the feet.
Yana Santos vs Luana Santos prediction
On the floor, both women put position over everything, but Yana should hold the edge on the feet. She has far more striking experience and more options at range. While she’s leaned on her grappling more recently, she’ll want to keep this long and stay out of the judo range where Luana thrives. Expect a steady diet of straight punches and kicks to the body and head to keep Luana at distance, the exact range where O’Neill exposed her.
Luana will likely find success early. If she closes the distance and gets her hands on Yana along the fence, her trips and top control could win her the opening round. But Yana is the more physical fighter, and even if Luana is the more technical grappler, the veteran has the strength and craft to out-scramble her and get back up. As the fight wears on, Yana’s experience and gas tank management should take over.
Luana comes in as the favourite with youth and momentum on her side, while Yana is shaking off a year out. However, this is a fight about range and patience, I see Yana crafting her way to another decision.
Prediction: Yana Santos to win by decision
