Randy Brown: Rangy veteran striker trying to get back in the win column

Randy Brown (20-8) has been a UFC mainstay for a decade, but arrives on a two-fight skid following a second-round TKO loss to Gabriel Bonfim and a decision defeat to Kevin Holland in April. Losing to someone as inconsistent as Holland isn’t a good look for a fighter with ranking ambitions. At his best, Brown is a technical long-range striker who makes full use of his length, and he showed real power knocking out Muslim Salikhov in the first round in 2024. But opponents who aren’t afraid to engage with power have troubled him: Niko Price knocked him out, Jack Della Maddalena submitted him, and a heavier Bryan Battle edged him on the cards.

Jacobe Smith: Undefeated finisher looking to announce himself

Jacobe Smith (13-0) is one of the most hyped prospects at welterweight, with many already tipping him as a future champion. The former Oklahoma State wrestling standout has finished all four of his UFC opponents, none making it past the second round, most recently stopping Bruce Whitehead in 92 seconds earlier this month. He’s a violent, athletic and powerful wrestler who hunts the finish rather than settling for control. His striking isn’t the most technical, but it’s improving and carries raw power. The concern is that his aggression makes him overextend, which is how Whitehead briefly hurt him on the way in, and he slows as fights wear on.

Randy Brown vs Jacobe Smith prediction

This is Smith’s biggest test yet, and he’s taking it on twelve days’ notice, less than a month after his last fight. Expect him to start at his usual frantic pace, pressuring constantly to close the distance where his power and wrestling take over. He’ll need to be careful on the way in, though, as Brown carries a six-inch reach advantage and could catch him with a knee or a straight down the pipe, exactly the kind of shot Whitehead found. Even if he’s caught, Smith showed in that fight he has the composure to secure a takedown, and on the ground he should dominate.

Brown’s path is at range. He’s the more technical striker with the length to keep Smith on the end of his shots. If this drags into the second half of the fight, the short notice and Smith’s tendency to slow down could see him outpointed. That’s the danger.

But Brown’s record against fighters who come forward with power isn’t pretty, and Smith brings more athleticism and urgency than anyone who has troubled him before. After being caught against Whitehead, expect Smith to come in with a sharper plan, blitz in, drop Brown with a big hook or straight and finish it with ground and pound.

Prediction: Jacobe Smith to win by KO/TKO in round one
