Renato Moicano: Crafty veteran out to prove he’s still a problem
Renato Moicano (21-7-1) arrives on a 1-2 run, but his recent losses come with context: a submission against the GOAT Islam Makhachev in a short-notice title shot, then a decision against high-level grappler Beneil Dariush. He bounced back in April, choking out Chris Duncan in the second round, and before that run he had beaten Jalin Turner and stopped Benoit Saint Denis. BJJ is his biggest strength, particularly scrambling to take the back and locking up a rear-naked choke, plus he’s fairly well rounded, with technically sound striking, a wealth of experience, and a bag full of tricks. His power isn’t explosive though, and he’s pretty hittable.
Tom Nolan: Rangy Aussie riding a five-fight win streak
Tom Nolan (11-1) is one of the biggest lightweights on the roster, and he’s improved fight by fight during a five-fight win streak. His most impressive performance came last time out, beating Fares Ziam by unanimous decision as a sizeable underdog in June. A rangy southpaw, he’s a high-paced striker with a varied arsenal and a nasty body kick, happy to eat one shot to land two. He isn’t always defensively responsible at range though, and he’s been stung by lesser opposition than Moicano. Lesser grapplers have stuffed his takedowns too, although he showed much-improved grappling against Ziam.
Renato Moicano vs Tom Nolan prediction
Early on, Nolan should have the advantage. He normally starts fast, and Moicano is very hittable. In this open-stance matchup, both will probably trade inside low kicks at range, while the Australian’s long southpaw jab and thudding body kicks should find a home. Nolan probably doesn’t have the power to put Moicano away with one shot, but if he stings him, he has the volume to follow up for a TKO.
That’s Nolan’s window, because the longer this goes, the better it gets for Moicano. Don’t be fooled by the 1-2 run – he’s only lost to elite grapplers recently. He neutralised and stopped Benoit Saint Denis, a more dangerous fighter than Nolan, although a less technical one. He also beat Jalin Turner, who is more deadly than Nolan and similarly big. Moicano isn’t a small lightweight himself, and he’s tough.
Nolan has developed impressively, but he went the distance with the likes of Alex Reyes and Viacheslav Borshchev, so it’s hard to see him finishing a veteran this durable. Over five rounds, Moicano’s experience and elite ground game should take over as Nolan’s takedown defence gets tested. Expect him to find a scramble, take the back and craft his way to a finish, most likely by submission.
Prediction: Renato Moicano to win inside the distance
