Talita Alencar: Elite grappler looking to drag Rodriguez into her world
Talita Alencar (8-1-1) is 4-1 in the UFC, most recently beating Julia Polastri by unanimous decision in April after submitting Ariane Carnelossi in the third round last November. That finish comes with context, though, as Carnelossi’s defensive wrestling is a glaring hole. A multiple-time IBJJF world champion in both gi and no-gi, Alencar is arguably the most decorated pure grappler at strawweight, with fluid transitions and speed in the scrambles. She lacks clean wrestling shots, relying on body locks and cage trips, but spams them at around three takedowns per 15 minutes. Her boxing is basic, and as a slow starter she can be picked apart by decent strikers.
Piera Rodriguez: Former KO artist turned relentless wrestler
Piera Rodriguez (12-2) has won three straight, beating Josefine Knutsson, Ketlen Souza and, in a March rematch, Sam Hughes. The Venezuelan built her regional reputation as a knockout artist, but her UFC run has evolved into something far grittier – all five of her UFC wins have come on the scorecards. She walks opponents down with heavy combinations to the head and body, then chains her double legs to keep them grounded, taking Souza down seven times. Once on top, she fights for position and control. However, her second-round armbar loss to Gillian Robertson shows she can be caught by elite submission artists comfortable working off their back.
Talita Alencar vs Piera Rodriguez prediction
Both women want this on the floor, but they get there in very different ways. Rodriguez shoots the double leg and chains her wrestling to retake or improve position, while Alencar wants body locks and trips along the fence. On the feet, the striking is fairly low level, with both throwing volume mainly to mask their entries.
There’s a shared opponent too, though it needs context. Alencar submitted Carnelossi, while Rodriguez “lost” to her, but that was a disqualification for headbutts from top position, not a beating. Both results say more about Carnelossi’s defensive wrestling than anything else, just as Rodriguez grounding Souza says plenty about Souza’s.
Alencar has the better pure jiu-jitsu, and she may well win the scrambles early while both are fresh. But Rodriguez fights a dirtier dogfight, she’s the bigger woman with nearly five inches of reach on Alencar, and she seems to have the better cardio. Her fights are gruelling by design, and Alencar’s slow starts won’t help her here. Even if the Brazilian wins the first scramble, Rodriguez’s persistence will see her go again and again.
Prediction: Piera Rodriguez to win by decision
