Jackson McVey: “The Moose” looking to secure his first UFC victory

Jackson McVey (6-2) enters his third UFC appearance in search of his first win inside the octagon. The young American arrived into the UFC undefeated with all six professional wins coming inside the first round, but has unfortunately been submitted in back-to-back outings, first by Brunno Ferreira and then by Zachary Reese. McVey is a Muay Thai southpaw with speedy kicks and an excellent clinch game. In the clinch, his elbows, knees and short strikes have done some serious damage. His weakness comes from the ground, where he hasn’t been able to work out of the bottom position yet in the UFC.

Sedriques Dumas: Can “The Reaper” save his UFC career?

Sedriques Dumas (10-4) is in desperate need of a win to keep his UFC career alive having lost his last two by stoppage and has gone 1-3 (1 NC) in his last five. Dumas was finished by Michal Oleksiejczuk via first-round TKO at UFC 314 before getting tapped by Donte Johnson in a guillotine in the second round. Dumas is athletic with a towering 79-inch reach and a good jab, but has repeatedly shown to lose composure against fighters who are dangerous on the feet. He dips his head down into a tight high guard when pressured, and his shot selection becomes wild and unstructured upon losing composure.

Jackson McVey vs Sedriques Dumas prediction

This matchup plays into McVey’s strengths. Dumas’ striking is basic at range and heavily reliant on his jab. Against Oleksiejczuk he became timid against his dangerous striking and mentally seemed to unravel the moment anything meaningful landed on him. McVey’s Muay Thai arsenal – body kicks, teeps to the body, and dangerous work in the clinch, is exactly the kind of pressure-heavy offence that has historically overwhelmed Dumas.

The southpaw vs orthodox matchup is a major factor here. Dumas doesn’t throw straight backhands down the pipe but instead loops wide overhands, which leaves the centre-line wide open for McVey’s straight left. McVey can close the distance and enter the clinch due to Dumas’ lack of threat on the feet, and this is where the fight will get ugly, fast. Dumas is inactive in the clinch, and has been consistently outworked at the UFC level, while McVey is vicious with his elbows and knees.

The one path to victory for Dumas is getting this to the ground and controlling the fight, which he has shown to do in some fights. McVey’s two UFC losses have proved his weakness on the floor, but Dumas’ grappling offence is opportunistic rather than systematic, and he’s more likely to lose composure and start wildly swinging than execute a takedown-heavy plan. Expect McVey to shell up Dumas on the feet before finishing him in the clinch, however, if possible avoid betting on this fight due to Dumas’ completely unpredictable, inconsistent nature.

Prediction: Jackson McVey to win by first round TKO/KO
