Mateusz Gamrot: Can "Gamer" return to winning ways against an unranked opponent?
Mateusz Gamrot (25-4) is one of the most underrated and consistently tough outs at 155 pounds. The #8 ranked fighter is a former two-division KSW champion who has built his UFC record testing himself exclusively against the very best. His four losses come against Guram Kutateladze, Beneil Dariush, Dan Hooker, and most recently Charles Oliveira. "Gamer" Gamrot has impressive wins against Diego Ferreira, Jalin Turner, Rafael Dos Anjos, Ludovit Klein, Rafael Fiziev, and non-other than number one ranked contender himself, Arman Tsarukyan. His record is seriously underrated, and he possesses elite-level wrestling - once he gets a hold of you, his transitions and control are suffocating. Gamrot isn't bad on the feet either, defending decently with a tight guard and utilising lateral movement to exit safely in exchanges.
Esteban Ribovics: Dangerous Argentinian striker looking to crash the top 10
Esteban Ribovics (15-2) has been one of the most entertaining prospects in the lightweight division over the past couple of years, earning three consecutive Fight of the Night bonuses across his last three UFC appearances. One of his biggest highlights include a 37 second headkick KO over Terrance McKinney - the round 1 king himself. Ribovics dropped a split decision to Nasrat Haqparast recently, before rebounding against Elves Brener. Ribovics is a high-volume, tight boxer with good power, a decent chin, and is composed in the pocket.
Mateusz Gamrot vs Esteban Ribovics prediction
Ribovics is a real danger on the feet, but the question has to be asked - has he ever shared the cage with a wrestler anywhere near the level of Gamrot? No, and that is where this fight gets settled. If Haqparast can take Ribovics down, Gamrot will definitely be able to do the same, he's an entirely different animal on the mat. Once Gamrot locks on to a single leg, his opponents typically find themselves spending large chunks of the fight on their backs, and his mat control is so dominant it makes even the most dangerous strikers timid, second-guessing their attacks for fear of the takedown.
That striking timidity is actually one of the biggest advantages Gamrot brings beyond the wrestling itself. After being controlled and smothered, opponents start pulling back their output, and the striking game opens up for him as a result. Ribovics doesn't invest heavily enough to the body early to slow Gamrot's pace in the later rounds either, which means "Gamer" should be able to impose his will consistently across all three rounds.
However, there is danger if Ribovics can find a clean shot in an early wild exchange, his volume and composure in the pocket are very real, but Gamrot is too experienced and too disciplined to let this turn into a brawl, plus he's shared the cage with much more dangerous opponents. Gamrot is a lock.
Prediction: Mateusz Gamrot to win by decision
