Vicente Luque: “The Silent Assassin” finds fresh life at 185
25 fights into a UFC run that carried him to the corner of the welterweight title picture, Vicente Luque (24-12-1) is well past his peak, but the move up to middleweight has given him something to work with. He snapped a two fight skid on his debut at 185, dropping Kelvin Gastelum with a right hand before wrapping up one of his signature front chokes inside the first round. He remains capable of ending a night with one shot when opponents wander carelessly into his range. Has Luque found his new calling at middleweight?
Tresean Gore:“Mr. Vicious” and the guillotine that keeps saving his career
Tresean Gore (6-4) is 3-4 in the UFC and every one of those three wins has come by guillotine; Josh Fremd, Antonio Trocoli, and most recently Azamat Bekoev, whom he put to sleep in the third round as a huge underdog. The 32-year-old is the bigger, more physical man here and a natural middleweight. He holds a high guard at range, doesn’t risk much, and doesn’t throw a great deal either, chipping with leg kicks and plenty of hip feints while waiting to counter with the big right hand. His jab is strong but not too fast.

Gore is the more physical man and Luque is slow now, slower still against 185ers, and that jab is going to find him repeatedly if this stays at range. If Gore keeps it long and disciplined he should win his, either on the cards or by catching Luque with the counter right.
The question is whether Luque survives that right hand when it lands. I lean towards yes. Joel Alvarez shut him out over three rounds ten months ago and Luque was still standing at the final bell, although the referee did pause the action for an apparent eye poke that didn’t happen, which did in fact save him in round one.
The path for the underdog is obvious. Gore averages a couple of takedowns a fight, and it can give up positions for the front-choke against Luque. In the scramble I’d like to think that Luque wouldn’t be caught in a guillotine as he’s so experienced on the ground, and his submission loss to Kevin Holland shouldn’t play too heavily into this match up as Holland is much more skilled on the ground than Gore is. The risk is that Gore’s raw strength could let him power out of bad positions. Give me the underdog to be the first man to submit Gore.
