Charles Johnson: The prospect killer looking to do what prospect killer does
Charles Johnson (19-9) has made a career out of ruining reputations, handing current champ Josh Van his only octagon defeat with a third-round KO, knocking out Lone’er Kavanagh, and out-pointing Su Mudaerji in between. The 35-year-old is a high volume pressure striker who works behind his boxing and does his best work marching forwards, mixing in front kicks and slapping quick low kicks off his front foot. The cardio remains excellent and the volume climbs as opponents tire, however, the durability could be fading, he’s been wobbled repeatedly as of late and was stopped inside a round by Alex Perez in January.

Eduardo Henrique (15-2) steps in for the injured Jose Ochoa on a handful of days’ notice. The Brazilian won the LFA flyweight title with a fourth-round TKO of Cody Davis and defended it twice by first-round KO, and he beat An Tuan Ho on the Contender Series last September without being handed a contract. He’s a dynamic striker who sits down heavily on his shots, switches stances constantly, mixes chopping leg kicks into his boxing, and angles off nicely rather than standing static to be hit.

Watching the tape, Henrique looks to have the tools. Then add some context. Johnson’s losses come almost exclusively to pressure grapplers and push him backwards, and Henrique is a man who clearly prefers to strike. He looked comfortable enough grappling on the regional scene but he isn’t a specialist, and Johnson has only ever been outgrappled by the better grapplers of the division.
The MMA math is telling too. Kavanagh knocked out An Tuan Ho inside a round on the Contender Series, Henrique needed all three to beat the same man on the cards, and Johnson absorbed everything Kavanagh had before knocking him out. There’s a level gap here.
Johnson is the bigger man here with two inches of height and three of reach, and this is a fight that ought to swing his way once he starts walking Henrique down. He may well drop the first round while he settles, but that’s the pattern he loses early to these prospects like Van and Kavanagh before finishing them later. Expect the body kicks to start landing in the second, the volume to increase, and Henrique to be dealing with something he hasn’t prepared for on this timeline.
