Edson Barboza: Is the finish line finally in sight for “Junior”

15 years and 32 fights into a UFC career that has taken on almost every relevant lightweight the past decade, Edson Barboza (24-14) arrives in Philadelphia on a three-fight skid and openly acknowledging this could be his last walk. He dropped decisions to Lerone Murphy and Drakkar Klose before Jalin Turner stopped him inside the first round at UFC 323 in December. The veteran remains one of the most celebrated kickers the sport has produced and is tied for third in lightweight history for knockouts, but his last two wins came in 2023, over Sodiq Yusuff and Billy Quarantillo.

Esteban Ribovics: “El Gringo” gets a name to put on the reel

Esteban Ribovics (15-3) has been in three of the more entertaining lightweight fights of recent years, taking Fight of the Night against Nasrat Haqparast, Elves Brener, and Daniel Zellhuber. Ribovics made his name flattening Terrance McKinney with a head kick inside the opening minute, and lands over seven significant strikes a minute, one of the higher output rates in the division. He was outgrappled last time out, submitted by Gamrot with an arm triangle, but nobody has questioned his striking, his chin, or his pace.

Edson Barboza vs Esteban Ribovics prediction

Don’t fall for the nostalgia. Barboza’s name carries considerably more weight than his current form does, and this is a rough piece of matchmaking, a high-volume, well-conditioned 30-year-old prospect to a man on the back end of his career, with no divisional implications whatsoever. Those 2023 wins haven’t aged well either, Billy Q lost again last weekend.

Barboza can still start strong. He was slamming his signature kicks against Turner early, and then Turner landed one clean shot and the whole thing came apart. The durability is gone. Ribovics may not carry Turner’s power early, but he more than compensates with volume and pressure, and he’s composed in the pocket, mixing to the head and body rather than just head hunting.

Barboza holds a six-inch reach advantage and this is a fight he wins at the end of his kicks, but he has no takedown threat to make Ribovics respect the entry. The Argentine will simply walk in, plant himself in boxing range, and that’s a range where Barboza is in trouble. Barboza opens up a lot when he punches, winging fairly wide with a bit of a wind up, which is exactly the invitation for a short uppercut or hook from a tight boxer like Ribovics. He’s also relentless with ground and pound once he’s got a man hurt on the ground.

Barboza’s only path to victory is catching something in the opening minutes, otherwise the pace will break him.

Prediction: Esteban Ribovics to win by KO/TKO
