Oksana Selekhmeteva made a confident start in Chennai, beating Teodora Kostovic 6-4 6-4 in the opening round. The Spaniard converted four of 15 break point opportunities and won 72% of points behind her first serve, although her first serve percentage was only 54%. Her standout Grand Slam achievement of 2026 was reaching the Australian Open third round, where she recorded an impressive win over Paula Badosa. Selekhmeteva also reached the Tolentino WTA 125 semi-finals in September. 

Polina Kudermetova also advanced after beating lucky loser Viktoria Morvayova in three sets. The sixth seed won 6-3 4-6 6-1. Her strongest achievements this season include reaching the Canberra and Oeiras WTA 125 finals. Kudermetova’s recent form has been uneven, including a straight sets defeat to Janice Tjen in Guangzhou, but she has been able to compete against higher ranked opponents.

With both players capable of aggressive tennis and occasional serving lapses, a deciding set would not be surprising.
