Janice Tjen began the defence of her Chennai Open title with a dominant win over Katherine Hui. Tjen conceded just the one break point and completed a 6-1 6-2 win after just 59 minutes on court. This was a return to winning ways for Tjen after her three set defeat to Harriet Dart in the second-round of the Guangzhou Open last week. The 24-year-old is still yet to advance to a tour-level quarter-final in 2026.

She faces Joanna Garland next. The 25-year-old won her second main draw match on the WTA Tour this year after beating Jill Teichmann in straight sets. Garland won 6-3 6-4 after one hour and 47 minutes, breaking her opponent’s serve on four separate occasions. Her standout achievement in 2026 was winning the Canberra WTA 125 title right at the start of the year, defeating Polina Kudermetova in the final. 

Tjen possesses the stronger ranking and greater recent experience at WTA level, but Garland’s hard court results and aggressive ball striking make her a dangerous opponent.
