Nuno Borges vs Karen Khachanov prediction

Nuno Borges was handed a lucky loser spot when Alejandro Davidovich Fokina withdrew just before he was scheduled to face Moise Kouame on Tuesday.

Borges took full advantage, playing some good, aggressive tennis to overpower his 17-year-old French opponent 6-3, 6-1. He was clearly delighted with his game, and rightly so, as he played some excellent tennis.

He now takes on Karen Khachanov, who enjoyed his own bit of good fortune. Khachanov was 4-1 down in the deciding set against Denis Shapovalov when the Canadian was forced to retire with a thigh injury. It was a somewhat fortunate route through to the second round for Khachanov, who was far from his best and looked likely to lose prior to Shapovalov’s injury.

Khachanov comes into this match knowing he has beaten Borges on both previous occasions they have met on the ATP Tour. It will be interesting to see how Borges approaches this one, given his poor record against Khachanov, and whether he can maintain the super-aggressive game he showed in the first round.

Khachanov is unlikely to play as poorly as he did against Shapovalov, and we would expect some kind of improvement. Just as Borges took advantage of his good fortune, we can see the same from Khachanov here.

Borges will not be able to be as aggressive against the big-serving Khachanov as he was against Kouame, and we expect the Russian to edge this one.
