Mei Yamaguchi vs Zhibek Kulambayeva prediction
Mei Yamaguchi faces an unusual challenge in Chennai, having lost to the same opponent in the final round of qualifying just 24 hours before their main draw encounter. The Japanese player, ranked outside the world’s top 250, beat Zeel Desai in her opening qualifying match before a three set loss to Zhibek Kulambayeva. She has struggled for consistency recently, winning only three of her last 10 matches. She failed to qualify for the Guangzhou Open after losing to Harriet Dart, with the Briton going on to win the tournament.
Kulambayeva will enter the draw with greater confidence after that win over Yamaguchi in a deciding set tiebreak. However, her form prior to the tournament was not particularly inspiring, as she suffered early defeats in Lisbon and Caldas da Rainha.
The head-to-head is locked at 1-1. Yamaguchi won their first meeting easily at an ITF event in Hong Kong seven years, but Kulambayeva levelled the match with that win in qualifying. The immediate rematch allows Yamaguchi an opportunity to adjust, and another competitive match looks likely.
