Carol Young Suh Lee was on the end of a heavy loss to former world number two Paula Badosa in the first-round of the Guangzhou Open last time out. The 24-year-old only enters the draw in Hong Kong as a lucky loser, following a defeat in the second stage of qualifying to Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Her opponent is Maria Sakkari, the fourth seed at the event. The Greek has bounced back this season, returning to the top 30 of the world rankings. Her highlight of the Asian swing so far was her run to the quarter-finals in Wuhan, though she would go on to lose a tight match to eventual winner Maja Chwalinska. She then suffered an early loss in Tokyo to Yulia Putintseva.

Despite that defeat, Sakkari will be the clear favourite to defeat Lee and advance to the next round.
