Venus Williams vs Mary Stoiana prediction

Venus Williams’ wait for a singles victory in 2026 continues after a heavy defeat in the first-round of the Guangzhou Open to Lilli Tagger last time out. The 46-year-old was uncompetitive throughout, losing 6-2 6-2. She has lost all 13 singles matches she has played this year, including 11 on hard courts. Her last victory came against Peyton Stearns in Washington in July 2025. The seven-time Grand Slam champion has accepted a wild card into Hong Kong and will be hoping to end her losing streak, although her recent results offer little encouragement. 

Mary Stoiana has been making strides recently, with two tour-level quarter-finals over the course of the last few weeks. In Osaka, Stoiana defeated Oleksandra Oliynykova and Moyuka Uchijima to advance to the last eight, before a loss to eventual champion Katerina Siniakova. She is up to a career high ranking of 113 in the world. 

Stoiana has demonstrated impressive form against established WTA opposition, and I expect that to continue against Williams.
