Sahaja Yamalapalli returns to the Chennai Open hoping to capitalise on a wild card opportunity in front of her home supporters. The 26-year-old Indian’s standout result of 2026 was reaching the Wichita ITF W35 final in May, where she defeated Yekaterina Dmitrichenko in the semi-finals before a loss to Reese Brantmeier. However, her recent form has been disappointing, with just two victories in her last 10 matches. Yamalapalli most recently competed at the W35 event in Bakersfield, defeating Natalie Kha in three sets, but then losing to Jenna Defalco. Ranked outside the world’s top 300, she faces a considerable step up in opposition. 

Simona Waltert has enjoyed greater success at WTA level, with her run to the Bastad WTA 125 final in July among her notable achievements of the season. The Swiss player, ranked world number 128, has nevertheless struggled for consistency, recording 26 victories and 30 defeats in 2026, including a 10-16 record on outdoor hard courts. Waltert’s latest appearance came in Guangzhou, where she suffered a first-round defeat to Jil Teichmann. 

Despite that setback, Waltert’s experience against stronger opposition gives her a significant advantage in this particular match.
