Leylah Fernandez is the third seed at the Hong Kong Tennis Open. The Canadian captured her first title of the year at the Singapore Open at the start of last month, beating Talia Gibson in the final. Fernandez continued with the momentum with further final appearances in Ningbo and Tokyo, though she failed to win the title on both occasions. Fernandez lost to world number one Elena Rybakina at the former event, and then suffered a defeat to Diana Shnaider at the latter just a few days ago. Nevertheless, she is one of the most in-form players on the tour right now.

Her first-round opponent is Sofia Kenin. The 2020 Australian Open champion has struggled this season, and her ranking has dropped to 187 in the world. Her latest appearance came in Guangzhou, where she suffered a narrow defeat to Kaitlin Quevedo in the opening round.

Kenin leads the head-to-head 2-0, but their last encounter was in 2023. I fully expect Fernandez to pick up her first win over the American this time around.
