Xinran Sun vs Claire Liu prediction

Xinran Sun reached her first tour-level quarter-final after defeating third seed Maria Timofeeva in three sets. The 16-year-old, who won the US Open juniors title last month, edged ahead in the deciding set tiebreak to win 6-3 4-6 7-6 (3). She also beat Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-3 6-4 in her first-round match at the tournament. At the China Open, she advanced to the third round before a straight sets defeat to two-time Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff.

She now faces Claire Liu. The American made it through via a walkover after Katerina Siniakova’s withdrawal from the tournament. Liu is one match away from a second successive appearance in the semi-finals of this event.

Sun cannot be counted out after the performances she has produced over the last few weeks, but Liu has an impressive recent record in Guangzhou. If she can extend the rallies and test the physicality of her younger opponent, her tournament experience could give her the edge overall.
