Elise Mertens will eye quick revenge against Leylah Fernandez.

The Belgian lost in three sets to the Canadian in Ningbo last week and kicked off her bid in Tokyo with a 6-4 6-2 victory over home hope Moyuka Uchijima.

Fernandez enjoyed a similar 6-2 6-4 triumph over another Japanese underdog, in the shape of Himeno Sakatome.

The head-to-head now stands at 2-2 and their recent form – as well as that showdown last week -suggests this will be another battle.
