Nora Cornolle: French veteran needs a reset in front of her people

Nora Cornolle (9-4) enters on back-to-back losses, most recently a decision defeat to Joselyne Edwards, and will be looking to arrest that slide at the Accor Arena. The 36-year-old is a Muay Thai-based clinch fighter at her best, landing knees and elbows up close, though her low kick at range lacks speed and her boxing is fairly basic. She keeps her chin up when she leans back, leaving her open. The ground game can be another concern, she tends to give up working back to her feet once position is lost, and her takedown defence isn’t the strongest.

Klaudia Sygula (8-2) has won back-to-back decisions since a rough UFC debut TKO loss to Melissa Mullins, and arrives in Paris looking to build real momentum in the division. The longer-framed Pole has the more varied boxing of the two, working behind a right hand and a long hook, and mixes in a step-in inside low kick. Her range management is sharper, and she has a nicely timed outside leg trip to bring the fight down, where she stays active with ground and pound.

The shared opponent tells its own story here. Cornolle finished Melissa Mullins inside two rounds, while Sygula was finished by the same woman on her UFC debut, not a great look. Cornolle should have the edge if this fight lives in the clinch, where her knees and elbows are the more effective weapons, but Sygula isn’t going to let this stay in Cornolle’s preferred range.

At range, Sygula should outclass her. She’s got a longer frame, the more varied boxing, and better range management, and both women will look to land low kicks throughout. Cornolle is the more physical of the two, but Sygula’s outside trip and body lock takedowns give her a route to control on the mat as well, an area where Cornolle has already shown she struggles to work back up once position is lost. Expect Sygula to land the cleaner volume at range across three rounds.
