Morgan Charriere: "The Last Pirate" seeks to regain his aura in front of a raucous home crowd
Former two-weight Cage Warriors champion, Morgan Charriere (21-12-1) returns following the first KO loss of his career after getting flatlined with a KOTY contender headkick from Melquizael Costa last time out. A man who is never in a dull fight, "The Last Pirate" has alternated wins and losses since joining the UFC to the tune of a 3-3 record. The Frenchman has devastating power in every limb, but he has an unfortunate tendency to eat a lot of shots in order to land his own. To underline his considerable experience, it's also worth noting that Charriere has actually shared the cage with the card's headliner, dropping a decision to Salahdine Parnasse all the way back in 2017.
Felipe Lima: The Brazilian aims to kickstart his featherweight career with a win
Last seen dropping a decision to Payton Talbott last June, Felipe Lima (14-2) aims to find new lease of life at featherweight after moving up from 135 pounds. A notably well-rounded threat with excellent striking and grappling, the 28 year old Brazilian is 2-1 under the UFC banner, scoring wins over Muhammad Naimov and Miles Johns before running into Talbott last time out. "Jungle Boy" has proven just as capable of grinding out a decision as he is of scoring a stoppage and has proven extremely difficult to finish; Lima hasn't been stopped since suffering a submission defeat in his pro debut more than a decade ago.
Morgan Charriere vs Felipe Lima prediction
While he's moving up a weight class for this one and could prove to be undersized, I still like Lima’s chances in enemy territory here. He did extremely well in the striking exchanges against a much slicker kickboxer in Payton Talbott and arguably could have won that fight if he hadn’t decided to grapple and subsequently fail a bunch of takedowns.
Charriere is a marauder with ferocious power on the feet, but he also leaves himself very open to being countered when he strikes, particularly when he throws kicks. That shortcoming was on display in his last appearance against Melquizael Costa, where he ended up eating a devastating head kick for his troubles.
I don’t think Lima is going to spark “The Last Pirate” out in similarly brutal fashion, but I do like his chances to consistently outstrike Charriere across three rounds. He’s also arguably the better grappler in this matchup, meaning that he has an alternate route to victory even if things do go pear-shaped on the feet. He might have been out of action for more than a year but he's returned to earn victories after similar layoffs before.
Charriere always comes to fight but the pick is Lima by hard fought decision.
Prediction: Felipe Lima to win by decision
