Javad Mahjoub: The hometown grappler looks to work his magic on the ground

Fighting out of Canada’s renowned Tristar Gym, Javad Mahjoub (5-0) enters this match up with a partisan crowd behind him. Leveraging a judo background, the Iranian born Canadian has scored four finishes in five wins and is primarily a grappler, leaning on his jiu jitsu to finish fights on the floor. He’s been extremely active on the Canadian pro grappling scene in addition to his MMA career, winning all but one of his grappling bouts to date.

Joel Faglier: Can "The Sniper" line up a headshot behind enemy lines?

Undefeated across six fights to date, Joel Faglier (6-0) makes his UFC debut in enemy territory against the hometown favorite. Turning pro after an impressive amateur career where he went 7-0 and won various regional titles, “The Sniper” has finished all but one of his pro wins, with two KOs and three submissions. He’s fought most of his career in Fury FC, most recently scoring a decision win over former UFC veteran, Cody East.

Javad Mahjoub vs Joel Faglier prediction

It’s hard to know what to expect from this one. Anything can happen at heavyweight and both of these men are entirely unproven at UFC level; they’re also virtually even in terms of height and reach.

With that being said, this contest likely goes one of two ways. Either Mahjoub leans on his superior grappling chops to wrestle the action to the mat and find a submission or a GNP TKO, or Faglier chins him with something brutal in the early goings.

Of those two outcomes, I’m leaning towards Faglier getting things done here. Mahjoub seems to be overly reliant on his ability to find a finish on the floor in order to secure a win and he’s almost a decade older than “The Sniper.” By contrast, Faglier has proven that he has the ability to turn the lights out on the feet.

There’s always a chance that the Canadian completely manhandles Faglier in the grappling and wraps him up to secure the tap, but we’re tentatively leaning towards the slight underdog to get things done here. The pick is Faglier by TKO.

Prediction: Joel Faglier to win by TKO
