Open poll and results

Erin Blanchfield: “Cold Blooded” looks to keep her title push alive

Erin Blanchfield (14-2) is 8-1 in the UFC, with her only loss in the promotion being a five round decision to Manon Fiorot, a top five fighter and a very good kickboxer. Her resume is stacked: submissions over Molly McCann, Jessica Andrade and Tracy Cortez, and decisions over Taila Santos and Rose Namajunas. The 27-year-old is a relentless pressure grappler and one of the best submission artists in the division. She presses forward into the clinch on the fence before dragging the fight to the mat. Her striking is basic and secondary, mainly there to set up the grappling, but she throws in decent volume and can catch opponents off guard with a head kick.

Jasmine Jasudavicius: Hometown grappler faces her biggest test yet

Jasmine Jasudavicius (15-4) bounced back from a first-round stoppage loss to Fiorot by grinding out a decision over Karine Silva in April. She’s a similar fighter to Blanchfield, a takedown-heavy grappler with a strong clinch game. Her biggest strengths are her control and her Thai clinch, as she showed against Silva, where she racked up over eight minutes of control time. She wins most of her fights on points, and while she has a couple of submissions on her record, she doesn’t carry the same threat as Blanchfield. She strikes in decent volume but has worse striking defence, and at 37, she’s ten years older and can slow down on the feet as the fight wears on.

Erin Blanchfield vs Jasmine Jasudavicius prediction

This could be a fight where the grappling cancels itself out. Blanchfield doesn’t have the strongest takedowns and relies on the body lock against the fence, and that’s exactly where Jasudavicius is strongest. The Canadian is probably better with the short-range strikes in the clinch, so it won’t be one-sided. There’s a 50/50 chance this becomes either an entertaining scrap in the middle of the cage or a boring clinch fest on the fence.

The shared opponents tell the story, though. Fiorot stopped Jasudavicius in just over a minute, while Blanchfield lasted all 25 minutes with her. Cortez beat Jasudavicius on the scorecards, while Blanchfield submitted her last November. Both submitted Andrade and both beat Miranda Maverick, but Blanchfield has also beaten the better fighters in Namajunas and Santos.

If this does hit the floor, Blanchfield has the better grappling, and definitely the more dangerous of the two. Jasudavicius will have the Edmonton crowd behind her, but Blanchfield has the youth, the higher-level wins, and the submission threat to win it.

Prediction: Erin Blanchfield to win
