Kyle Nelson: Canadian veteran looks to fraud check a prospect

Kyle Nelson (17-7-1) is a veteran of 12 UFC fights. He’s a switch-stance kickboxer with a similar frame to Perez, and has decent wins over Blake Bilder, Bill Algeo and Matt Frevola. Durability has been the problem throughout his career. He’s been finished in every UFC loss except one, a decision against Jai Herbert, and most recently Terrance McKinney stopped him in 24 seconds in March, which followed a first-round TKO loss to Steve Garcia. Nelson does have solid takedown defence, stuffing shots against Bilder, but at 35, his time is thinning to muster up a run.

Cristian Perez: Slick grappler makes the most of his second chance

Cristian Perez (15-2) earned his UFC contract on the second time around, stopping Logan Paxton in the second round on the Contender Series last month. His first attempt ended in heartbreak against Manoel Sousa. He dominated the opening two rounds with slick transitions and multiple submission threats, then faded badly and was stopped in the third. The 27-year-old Mexican is a high-level grappler who gets most of his takedowns from the body lock, but he’s also dangerous on the feet, fighting chaotically. He’s fairly durable, especially when fresh, but his cardio and composure under heavy fire can be seen as weaknesses.

Kyle Nelson vs Cristian Perez prediction

Perez’s Sousa loss shouldn’t be overthought. Sousa carries crazy power into the final round, and Nelson doesn’t carry his power late anywhere near as well. Perez’s biggest weaknesses are his cardio and his composure under heavy fire. A powerful striker with good takedown defence is his ultimate counter, and Nelson only half fits that bill. Nelson’s path to victory is to keep this a point fight at range and use his experience to drag Perez into the later rounds. He knows Perez wants to close the distance and get to the body lock, but while his takedown defence is decent, it shouldn’t be strong enough to keep the majority of this fight standing. Perez wants this on the ground as fast as possible, where his ground and pound and submissions take over.

Perez isn’t one-dimensional either. His chaotic aggression on the feet could recreate the McKinney fight, where Nelson lost his composure against a ferocious start, shelled up and invited the finish. If Perez comes out with that same confidence, he can roll through Nelson in the first round, before the gas tank questions ever come into play.

Prediction: Cristian Perez to win in round one
