Cody Chovancek: “The Best Fisherman in MMA” looks to reel in a debut win on private land
Cody Chovancek (9-0) finally makes his long-awaited UFC debut, over a year after earning his contract with a third round knockout of Raphael Uchegbu on the Contender Series. The Canadian trains at Niagara Top Team alongside Mike Malott and Jasmine Jasudavicius, and won the Unified MMA Bantamweight title with a fifth round calf slicer. Chovancek is well-rounded, with deceptive power, good clinch knees and clean combinations in the pocket, however, he’s ploddy for a bantamweight and attacks in straight lines without creating angles. He has decent wrestling and active ground and pound, though his control and bjj aren’t the strongest.
You Su-young: Road to UFC winner looks to wrestle his way back into the win column
Su Young You (16-4) won the Road to UFC season 3 bantamweight tournament before adding unanimous decision wins over AJ Cunningham and Long Xiao. That run ended in March when Elijah Smith dropped him and subbed him in the second round after You took the first with chain wrestling. The South Korean is a pressure wrestler through and through, averaging 4.26 takedowns per 15 minutes. He times his entries well, scrambles well and has decent ground and pound. His striking is low volume, mainly jabs and leg kicks to set up the shot, but he doesn’t absorb too much either. He doesn’t deal well with pressure, and has no finishes beyond the regional scene.
Cody Chovancek vs You Su-young prediction
This is a clear clash of styles. You will be shooting for takedowns and chaining his wrestling for 15 minutes, while Chovancek will look to keep it standing, where the finishing upside lies firmly on his side. The Korean hasn’t really got the power at UFC level so Chovancek’s durability won’t be tested much, the real question is whether he can stay upright.
Chovancek has the power to put You away, but his striking isn’t the most dynamic. Everything comes in straight lines, so You should see it coming and have plenty of chances to time his level changes on the entries. The ploddy footwork is a problem against a wrestler like You, and once he’s down, Chovancek’s limited bjj is likely to get him stuck on the ground.
We haven’t really seen Chovancek against UFC level opposition. He took some regional opponents to decision and fighting lower-level competition can flatter a fighter’s skill set. I see You working his control and grinding out the decision.
Prediction: Su Young You to win by decision
