Delphine Benouaich: Boxing-heavy Frenchwoman finally gets her octagon moment
Delphine Benouaich (7-2) arrives in the UFC off the back of a semi final run on The Ultimate Fighter 34, having built her record on the French regional scene with ARES and King of Fighters. Four of her seven wins have come by knockout, and both of her losses were by decision. The 31-year-old is a boxer at heart, pumping out straight shots at a high volume with the occasional calf kick mixed in, and she can slip and rip hooks to the body or an uppercut up top in the pocket. Her combinations are basic though, largely head-hunting with no real change in rhythm or power.
Sofia Montenegro: “La Bruja” earned her contract in defeat and now drops a weight class
Sofia Montenegro (6-2) got her UFC contract in unusual fashion, losing a split decision to Jeisla Chaves on the Contender Series last September and being signed anyway after a bloody, high-volume scrap in which she scored a knockdown and simply refused to fade. Three knockouts and a heel hook sit on the Argentinian’s record. The 27-year-old is the bigger and stronger woman here, working behind a jab more consistently than her opponent, and she times a nice entry for the outside leg trip. She isn’t especially punishing on top, but she can ride out the position and bank rounds from it.
Delphine Benouaich vs Sofia Montenegro prediction
Three inches of height and five inches of reach is a meaningful gap at 115, and it shapes everything about how this one should play out. Benouaich has to be in boxing range to do her work, that’s where her volume lives, but her entries are predictable, alternating punches from both sides with nothing to disguise them. Montenegro doesn’t need to go there. She sticks behind the jab, and with the longer frame she can score from a step further out and make Benouaich walk through her straight shots to get there.
The physical gap is the through-line. Montenegro carries the heavier hands and looked entirely comfortable absorbing punishment against Chaves before walking forward for more. Benouaich’s head movement tends to disappear in exchanges and she’s fairly hittable, which is a problem against a bigger woman happy to trade. Montenegro also has a grappling edge, that outside leg trip could become a weapon in this bout, and she transitions well enough in scrambles to find the dominant position to land ground and pound and elbows to ride out rounds. Her physicality will allow her to be stronger in the clinch, and when she smells blood there is more urgency to chase the finish.
One thing to look out for is the weight cut. This is her first trip down to strawweight, if the weight drains the physicality then the read will be very wrong. At underdog odds, the risk is priced in.
Prediction: Sofia Montenegro to win by decision
