Dan Hooker: “The Hangman” has been here before, but never at this price

Dan Hooker (24-14) has been a fixture of the lightweight division for the best part of a decade and is still ranked at #10, but he arrives in Paris on a two-fight skid. Arman Tsarukyan submitted him with an arm triangle in November, then Benoit Saint Denis opened him up with elbows from full mount at UFC 325 in a genuine bloodbath. Before those setbacks, the 36-year-old had strung together wins over Claudio Puelles, Jalin Turner and Mateusz Gamrot. He’s rangy, kicks well, and his most dangerous weapons are the knee and head kick, and he will jump on a guillotine the moment anyone leaves their head on the outside of a takedown.

Salahdine Parnasse (23-2) comes with a resume most debutants can only dream of, having held both featherweight and lightweight gold in KSW and defended the lightweight title four times. The 28-year-old is on a five-fight KO streak and last stopped Kenny Cross inside a round back in May. He’s a dynamic striker with fast hands and a good jab, throws a lovely high kick from open stance, times his takedowns well, and finds nice trips off the body lock against the fence, transitions cleanly on the mat and carries heavy ground and pound once he’s on top.

The odds here are absurd. Hooker sits at more than a 5/1 underdog against a man who has never set foot into the UFC. Parnasse is good and has paths to victory, but does he win this five times out of six? Not a chance.

Context matters on the striking. Parnasse probably does have the better boxing at this stage of their respective careers and he certainly has the faster hands, but Hooker’s last three fights came against BSD, Arman, and Gamrot, which is completely a different proposition to Parnasse’s recent opponents. Though, Hooker’s last three wins came over Puelles who isn’t high level, a Turner who isn’t that dangerous once you survive the first round, and a Gamrot who poses no threat on the feet. Parnasse’s grappling isn’t at Gamrot’s level, but his striking is a clear step up from anything Hooker has beaten lately.

The concerns are that Hooker has absorbed a staggering amount of damage across his career, and while you can point to the calibre of Arman and BSD, this might simply be the point where the durability starts to go. The BSD fight reopened a lot of old scar tissue, and seven months isn’t long for that to heal properly. His route to victory is the knee, the headkick, the guillotine, and most importantly the volume and experience he possesses. If he starts walking Parnasse down and applies the pressure, Hooker is live, but if the pressure walks the other way, Parnasse will most likely piece Hooker up.

The price is completely wrong, but the pick isn’t.
