York vs Northampton prediction

Both of these clubs have a habit of going out in this round. Northampton Town have lost in the first round in each of the last six seasons, including defeats to non-league sides Oxford City in 2020-21 and Kettering Town in 2024-25, and last year’s exit came against Oldham Athletic, with their best recent run being the fourth round in 2019-20. York City lost at this stage in each of the last two seasons, to Barnsley and Wycombe Wanderers, and also to Buxton in 2021-22, with their last run past this stage coming in 2023-24, when they reached the second round.

The managers are new, with Scott Lindsey taking over at York in July after Stuart Maynard was sacked, and Chris Hogg appointed at Northampton in May. The pair drew 1-1 at York in the league last month. York are seventh in League Two but have shipped eight goals in their last two league games, with 3-1 and 5-2 defeats at Barnet and Grimsby Town, both sides in the top half of the table, which suggests they can be got at by teams with a real attacking threat. Northampton are 21st and have scored just nine goals in 13 league games, so they are not the kind of side to take advantage of that.

The Cobblers lost 1-0 at home to Oldham on Tuesday, but they beat Colchester United 2-0 and won 2-0 at Grimsby in the weeks before, which shows a team that can grind out results when it keeps things tight. A leaky defence meeting a blunt attack should keep this one low-scoring, so we are backing under 2.5 goals.

York vs Northampton tip: Under 2.5 goals
