Port Vale vs Scunthorpe prediction

Port Vale have shown they can handle the FA Cup, reaching the quarter-finals last season before a 7-0 defeat to Chelsea. They are 19th in League Two but are in decent shape, winning three of their last five games in all competitions. That sequence includes a 4-2 victory over Rochdale and a 5-0 thrashing of Manchester City’s under-21s in the EFL Trophy, results that suggest the Valiants have found a bit of attacking confidence after a slow start.

Scunthorpe United have lost their last five National League games and are 23rd, conceding 14 goals in that run. The Iron finished fifth in the National League last season, so this has been a sharp fall, and they went out of the National League Cup on penalties against Wolves’ under-21s on Tuesday. They have lost at this stage in each of their recent first-round appearances, including a 1-0 defeat to Blackpool last season, and this time they got here by winning 3-1 at Boston United in the fourth qualifying round, although Boston beat them 2-1 in the league a fortnight later.

Vale should have too much quality for a side who are short on confidence, but Scunthorpe have scored in three of their five defeats and have attacking players who can cause problems on the counter. We are backing Port Vale to win with both teams scoring.
