Wimborne vs Crawley prediction

Wimborne Town’s best-known first-round appearance came in 1982-83, when they lost 4-0 at Aldershot, so this is a big day for the Magpies. They are ninth in the Southern League Premier South and unbeaten in five games in all competitions, with the notable feature of that run being the defence, which has kept four clean sheets in five.

The qualifying route was the definition of grit. Wimborne drew 0-0 with Portishead Town before winning the replay 3-1 after extra time, then needed penalties (4-3) after two 1-1 draws against Weston-super-Mare. They beat Crowborough 2-1 away and then National League South side Chelmsford City 1-0 in the fourth qualifying round, and Wimborne have been tight at the back all the way through.

Crawley Town are bottom of League Two with nine points from 12 games and only two wins, having conceded 21. They were beaten 3-0 by non-league Boreham Wood in this round last season and are still short of the form that took them to the fourth round in 2020-21. There have been signs of life since defeats to Salford City (2-1) and Shrewsbury Town (3-2), with a 1-1 draw with Tranmere Rovers and a 1-0 win at Oldham Athletic last time out. Crawley are the favourites on paper, but their results suggest they will score, while Wimborne’s defence is the sort that makes games tight. We are backing a game with fewer than four goals.

Wimborne vs Crawley tip: Under 3.5 goals
