Miles Johns: “Chapo” fighting for his roster spot
Miles Johns (15-5) is a UFC veteran now twelve bouts into his promotional run, but he isn’t in great form, having lost his last three. The Fortis MMA man dropped a decision to Felipe Lima up at featherweight, then a split decision to Jean Matsumoto that could have gone his way, before Daniel Marcos choked him out in the second round in November. Johns throws heavy leg kicks and has nice counters with his hands, liking the check hook against the orthodox straight and the 2-3 when he’s being pressured back.
Jessie Rosas: “Tachidito” steps up an enormous level on debut
Jessie Rosas (8-1) is the 23-year-old brother of Raul Rosas Jr, and his stand-up game is more sophisticated, with higher-level boxing and far more comfort keeping the fight on the feet. Like his brother though, he prefers the grappling, transitioning well on the floor, staying active with light ground and pound and searching for the submission. He fights southpaw with nice boxing combinations, good body work on the cage and uppercuts in the pocket, and he uses his lead hand well to find range and set up combinations. The record has been built against really low level competition.

The reason to be interested in Rosas here isn’t his record, it’s what keeps happening to Johns. Marcos was able to control and work positionally on the floor against him, and against Matsumoto, even when Johns initiated the ground game with a takedown of his own, he put himself in a dangerous front choke. His takedown defence is decent, he’ll just need to be careful initiating the grappling exchanges in this matchup against an opponent that’s more comfortable on the ground than on the feet.
Johns’ habits on the feet feed into it too. He isn’t the most defensively sophisticated, on the opponent’s entrance he likes to dip his head and swing the overhand, and he swings pretty wild in the pocket during exchanges, throwing from his hips and leaving his head exposed.
Rosas has looked good but it’s against really low level competition, whereas the guys Johns has lost to recently are all strong and established prospects. There’s a chance that he just gets broken down and can’t handle the pressure, where he may feel as if he can’t implement his game. Rosas also gets a bit too excited on the feet, and when he opens up in exchanges he typically gets caught, suffering flash knockdowns against Ruano. Johns is a higher level fighter with probably more power than Ruano too, so it would be a lot more dangerous for Rosas to open up as much. Rosas has the skills to win this by keeping it at range and using his grappling, it’s just a question of whether he gets the chance to showcase it.
This isn’t a confident pick, but at a moderate underdog price, I’d side with him.
