Mateusz Gamrot: The most underrated and consistently tough out at 155
Former two-division KSW champion Mateusz Gamrot (26-4) holds wins over Diego Ferreira, Jalin Turner, RDA, Rafael Fiziev, Ludovit Klein, Esteban Ribovics, and remains the last man to beat Arman Tsarukyan. Every one of his four losses came against good or elite competition; Guram Kutateladze, Beneil Dariush, Dan Hooker, and Charles Oliveira, who face cranked him in round two last October. The core of his game is elite-level, suffocating wrestling, once he locks onto a single leg opponents spend large chunks of the fight on their backs. He’s not bad on the feet either, defending with a tight guard and using lateral movement to exit safely rather than getting caught in straight-line exchanges.
Quillan Salkilld: The hottest prospect at 155, and possibly the entire sport right now?
Quillan Salkilld (12-1) is a perfect 5-0 in the UFC with four of those five earning Performance of the Night, riding a twelve-fight win streak after his only professional loss came on his 2021 debut. The former Eternal MMA lightweight champion knocked out Nasrat Haqparast with a brutal head kick at UFC 321 on ten days’ notice, submitted Jamie Mullarkey inside a round, and then starched Beneil Dariush in the first in Perth. He’s a complete martial artist, a BJJ black belt with credentialed wrestling, fast and powerful head kicks, a counter right hand, and elbows thrown down from guard on opponents’ entries.

The APEX octagon should favour Gamrot’s style. In fact, he’s never lost inside that building, and the smaller cage makes it far easier for him to implement his forward pressure and chain his takedowns together. Salkilld needs to finish this in the first three, or do a significant amount of damage in that time, if he doesn’t, Gamrot starts to take over.
The real weapon here isn’t the wrestling itself, it’s what the wrestling does to a striker’s confidence. Gamrot’s mat control is so dominant that it makes even dangerous strikers timid, they start second-guessing their output for fear of the takedown. That’s exactly how the Ribovics fight went, after being taken down and controlled, the next time he was on the feet his volume dropped and he threw a lot lighter, not committing to his shots.
That being said Salkilld is actually more of a grappler than a striker, it’s just that his recent wins have made people think otherwise. He may not be as good a grappler as Gamrot, but Salkilld is the better striker and the more well-rounded fighter, and he fights a lot better on the backfoot. Gamrot doesn’t do as well going backwards, he works his game on the front foot. Like we saw against Hooker, Oliveira, and Klein, they had more success against him when they took the centre of the cage, and that’s something Salkilld may be able to do.
We’ve seen Salkilld slow down and get taken down by Ashmouz, and his defensive responsibility drops once he tires. Gamrot is a whole other level of control wrestler too, we haven’t seen Salkilld face elite level competition yet. This will be a great showcase of high level MMA.
